Letter from FreePress.net sent today to me concerning high speed internet networks in NC
Dear William,
The North Carolina State Senate just rammed through an awful bill that would stop local communities from building their own high-speed Internet networks.
The so-called Level Playing Field/Local Government Competition Bill (H129), sponsored by Time Warner Cable, is a huge threat to North Carolina communities that want to build their own networks because they aren’t well served by Time Warner Cable and other big cable companies.
With the Senate out of the way, this bad bill is headed to the desk of Governor Bev Perdue, who has hinted that she’ll veto it.
But hints aren’t enough. We need to make absolutely sure that Gov. Purdue vetoes this bill:
Call Gov. Perdue’s office now at 919-733-2391 and urge her to veto the Level Playing Field/Local Government Competition Bill.
Here’s a sample script you can use:
I'm calling to ask Gov. Purdue to veto the Level Playing Field/Local Government Competition Bill (H129), which just passed the General Assembly.
This unacceptable bill would prohibit local communities in North Carolina from building their own high-speed Internet networks. Large sections of our state still lack access to high-speed Internet because major corporations like Time Warner Cable refuse to provide service in these areas. If phone and cable companies won’t build out their networks, local communities should have the chance to step in.
For the sake of our communities, I urge Gov. Purdue to veto the Level Playing Field/Local Government Competition Bill when it crosses her desk.
We’re witnessing dirty politics at its worst. Time Warner Cable and its cronies in the North Carolina General Assembly are so intent on keeping competition out, they’re willing block local citizens from creating better communications networks for their communities. This bill is unethical and it’s wrong, and it needs to be stopped.
Please call Gov. Purdue now and urge her to veto this bill.
Thanks,
Josh Levy
