Graduated Licensing

North Carolina allows residents under 18 to start with limited, supervised driving privileges that increase with age. Here are some provisions of the current law.

Limited learner's permit, age 15-17: Driver education class required. No driving without supervising adult in front seat, and no nighttime driving for first six months.

Limited provisional license, age 16-17: Successful road test and 12 months with learner's permit required. Unsupervised driving is allowed only from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. or for trips any time to work or volunteer fire, rescue or EMS duty. There are limits on how many under-21 passengers can ride in the car.

Full provisional license, age 16-17: Six months of limited provisional driving required, with no moving violations or seat belt infractions. Most restrictions are lifted.

Full license, 18 or over: No requirement for provisional license, supervised driving or driver education.
