Letter from Public Knowledge - Help Make It Legal to Rip Your Own DVDs

Help Make It Legal to Rip Your Own DVDs

Dear PK Supporter,

Quick—what’s the difference between ripping a CD and ripping a DVD? One is legal, the other is not.

DVDs are protected by a digital lock. And the mere act of breaking that lock—even for a legitimate purpose—is a violation of the Digital Milennium Copyright Act (DMCA).

This year, PK is asking the Copyright Office to grant a broad exemption to that rule. The exemption would allow anyone to break the digital lock on DVDs they own in order to transfer the movie or TV show to another device they own.

We need your help to convince the Copyright Office that people actually want and need this exemption.

Thanks for standing with us in the fight!
