Kentrolis was a student at New Hanover High on June 1, 1961, when he finally won the 12-hour tug-of-war with the massive fish off the Crystal Fishing Pier, near the Masonboro Inlet.
“I was 16 years old, and I fished,” Kentrolis said recently from his home in Goodview, Va., where his game room has mounts of citation largemouth bass, crappie, walleye and a pair of large striped bass. “There were no fast food joints so I didn’t have a summer job. Basically, I was fishing every day, all day.”
